In the past three decades, the number of obese adults in the United States has doubled and the number of obese children almost tripled, which may lead to increased medical expenditures, productivity loss, and stress on the health care system. Economic analysis now shows that weight gain is the result of individual choices in response to economic environments and demonstrates that incentives can influence individual behaviors affecting weight. Determinants are varied and include year- and area-specific food prices, availability of food outlets and recreational facilities, health insurance, and minimum wage levels. Timely and important, Economic Aspects of Obesity provides a strong foundation for evaluating the costs and benefits of various proposals designed to control obesity rates.

The 2010-2015 Outlook for Anti-Obesity Drugs in Oceana

The 2010-2015 Outlook for Anti-Obesity Drugs in Oceana

b2215026ecc85966506ce79f378e28c0 The 2010 2015 Outlook for Anti Obesity Drugs in Oceana

This econometric study covers the outlook for anti-obesity drugs in Oceana. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the countries in Oceana). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E. for anti-obesity drugs in Oceana. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the national markets of Oceana. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

The Need of a Diet Meal Plan for Kids to Avoid Obesity..

The Need of a Diet Meal Plan for Kids to Avoid Obesity..

When a person is so overweight that it starts affecting his health is when the person is obese. Obesity can also be explained as the excess amount of fat in your body. Obesity in adults was an epidemic already and now obesity in children is also spreading fast.

Obesity among kids may become a cause of concern leading to health complications and the kids being obese even before they enter the adulthood. Not only the child’s risk of getting severely ill gets increased due to obesity but it also has a lasting effect on the child’s social and more importantly, emotional issues.

There were rare cases of obesity in the past, but of late, obesity cases are on a rise and even alarming is the rate it is rising amongst the kids. It is estimated that 15% of the adolescents and kids in the US are obese.

]]>

Why is this sudden increase in the amount of people affected by obesity? Blame it on the lifestyle! Two major reasons for the rising cases of obesity amongst kids’ are- the unhealthy diet, that is very rich in sugar and fats and the lack of exercise which leads to fat accumulation as there is no burning of the calories.

Those were the reasons for putting on weight now let’s see the effects on the child who is suffering from obesity.

A child’s risk of suffering from heart problems like, heart attack, or heart stroke is increased,
Obesity may lead to many problems of bones and joint as well(like bow legs),
Hypertension which leads to headaches or may affect the vision,
High blood pressure, Gall bladder diseases, Diabetes, are some to name.

These are only the physical effects of obesity, the harm it does on the psychological front of your child is even worse. Obesity causes embarrassment which further damages the self- esteem of your child.

Why let your child go through such an ordeal??? Why let his or her self esteem be affected? Lets help them make a better tomorrow by changing their lifestyle today. Improper diet is one very important reason of putting on weight. Give yourself and your families a diet meal plan which will help you reduce your weight and rid you of obesity.

Statistics show that one in three children is overweight by the time they leave primary school. Help us; help you, make your child one of the two who leaves their primary school in a fit state!

The Doughnut Cheeseburger and Rising Obesity in the US

The Doughnut Cheeseburger and Rising Obesity in the US

Michelle Obama is doing hula hoops at the White House to raise fitness awareness and in other corners of our country we have the creation of the Krispy Kreme doughnut cheeseburger complete with bacon that clocks in at 1,500 calories. According to reports 17,000 of these culinary nightmares were recently served at a fair in Massachusetts. We applaud the efforts of our first lady with the message to get moving or get fat, but is it any surprise we are fat and getting fatter with such bad eating habits?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conclude that the “American society has become ‚Äòobesogenic’ characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, nonhealthful foods, and physical inactivity.‚Äù In other words we eat too much and exercise too little.

Maybe some hard statistics will wake us up to the reality that in general we are heading in the wrong direction and the Krispy Kreme doughnut does not help. The past 20 years has shown a dramatic increase in obesity in the US according to the CDC. In 2008 Colorado was the leanest state with an 18.5% obesity rate and Mississippi reported the highest obesity rate at 32.8%. The CDC obesity statistics chart includes data by state.

From the study data collected by the CDC the prevalence of obesity is 51% higher for blacks and 21% higher for Hispanics as compared to whites. Greater prevalence of obesity for blacks and whites are found in the South and Midwest. Hispanics in the Northeast have lower obesity prevalence than Hispanics in the Midwest, South or West.

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. An adult who has a BMI between 25—29.9 is considered overweight. An adult who has a BMI of 30 or more is considered obese. BMI is calculated from weight and height and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems.

Being overweight and obese can led to serious diet-related chronic diseases which include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke. Non-fatal health problems associated with obesity include respiratory difficulties including sleep apnea, chronic musculoskeletal problems, skin problems and infertility.

A person’s body weight is the result of many factors including genes, metabolism, behavior, environment, culture and socioeconomic status. Generally speaking being overweight and obese is the result of an energy imbalance. Simply it involves eating too many calories and not burning enough calories through physical activity. Genetics and the environment may increase the risk of weight gain but behavior and personal choices play a big role in a person’s weight.

What can we do? Eat a balanced calorie appropriate diet and cut out the nutritionally empty high caloric snacks. Reduce the time spent watching television and other sedentary behaviors such as video games. Build physical activity into regular routines. If you are maintaining your weight you should eat roughly the same number of calories that your body is using through body functions and physical activity. If you are trying to lose weight you should be eating fewer calories than your body is using. Your body will pull from its fat storage cells for energy so your weight will decrease.

Bariatric surgery is also known as weight loss surgery. The two most common procedures performed are gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding. Research has demonstrated these procedures result in significant long-term weight loss, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors and a reduction in mortality.

The increase in consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats such as the Krispy Kreme Cheeseburger, combined with reduced physical activity has led us to the brink of this public health crisis. Being overweight or obese is unhealthy for individual Americans and our nation as a whole. Ask not what your country can do for you but rather how many hula hoops you can do for it in an effort to reduce our collective weight.

Fatter And Fatter: The Definition Of Obesity

What is the definition of obesity? This is a serious concern for everyone who knows they are carrying a little extra baggage. Apparently this is more than half the population these days! Obesity is now defined by the American Medical Association as a disease. So if you’re too fat and you’re wondering if you have crossed the line into obesity status keep reading.

Signs of obesity include first and foremost your weight obviously. Is your weight too much for a person of your age, body type and gender? If a woman is 20% above what is considered the normal range for her height then she is obese. Are you large boned, are you an athlete with a lot of muscle mass? Then give yourself a few pounds. What is considered a healthy weight for the average person? The chart below is based on a Body Mass Index of 20 – 25. Because there is such a wide range it’s important to discuss your weight with your doctor and let him help you determine your health risks. Other signs of obesity are sleep apnea, hypertension, stress, incontinence, menstrual irregularities, excess facial hair and depression. If you decide to see a doctor, look for a doctor who understands the importance of eating according to the glycemic index who can individualize a weight loss program for you.

The chart above is for adults. If you believe your child is overweight you need to intervene in a serious way. According to the Health and Medical Research Foundation, in 1968 5% of all children were overweight. In 2004 the numbers had risen to 18% in children 6 years to 11 years old. For those between the ages of 12 years to 17 years 15% were overweight. In 40 years the number of overweight children has roughly tripled. One third of American Indian children are obese. Obesity is also more common in Latino and African American children. No doubt these childhood obesity statistics are due to poor choices, lack of parental supervision and perhaps a lack of affordable, nutritious food.

The health risks for obese children are immense. The Center for Disease Control has linked excess fat to 20 different health problems from high blood pressure to liver cancer. We know that poor diets and inactivity are the causes of obesity and overweight children usually become overweight and even obese adults. Today our children are more sedentary than any other generation and at the same time they are bombarded with television advertisements for unhealthy foods. We need to be vigilant about their nutrition and limiting foods with few nutrients and saturated fats.

What about fast food? Does fast food cause obesity? It is not a coincidence that in the years that the obesity statistics have risen so dramatically that the fast food industry now dominates our urban landscapes. Every corner it seems has a fast food restaurant. Even if parents have the best intentions with both parents working it’s a huge temptation to just do what is convenient. Fast foods are high glycemic foods that are full of trans fats, the worst saturated fats. French fries and hamburgers raise blood sugar and do not have enough nutrients to make them worth the calories. And they are full of calories! A quarter pounder with cheese has 530 calories with 270 calories being the saturated fat. So does fast food cause obesity? When you eat it often you are not getting a nutritious diet but one high in unhealthy fat.

Obesity is everyone’s problem because it adds to the burden of our health care system. Some other critical facts about obesity include the tremendous expense. According to a recent issue of Time magazine we spend an astonishing 7 billion a year on diet related illness. Cheap food and poor dietary choices extract an extremely high price in terms of being sick and more susceptible to disease. It may soon overtake tobacco as the leading cause of preventable death. It’s time to educate ourselves about the role of good nutrition in losing weight and maintaining the fat loss through a healthy lifestyle. Educate yourself so you can educate your children and be a healthy role model.

USA Boot Camps -The Workouts to Get rid of Obesity

USA Boot Camps -The Workouts to Get rid of Obesity

When we think of obesity, what usually come to our minds are the fat bellies on the beaches, sumo wrestlers and of course the rising obesity rates of USA.

Even when there was an economic crisis it did not take the toll on the obesity rates which continued to boom in the United States. The obesity statistics are alarming as the obesity rates for teens have tripled over the last twenty years. The teens are getting obese due to lack of physical activity and having junk food and the general obesity rates are nothing much to boast about.

As said above, the lack of physical activity leads to obesity, but what really lacks is not physical activity, but self discipline in both adults and teens. You can imagine the number of people who have enrolled themselves in gym, but hardly visit them thrice a month. The mentalities of people are now much more inclined to leisure rather than some sort of physical activity. The various technological advancements ensure that one can get the most comfortable atmosphere without stretching his arms or legs.

]]>

So from this, we can know that what we need is discipline to reduce obesity. This kind of discipline is present only in USA boot camps. These boot camp fitness programs are usually run by fitness instructors, gym trainers. These instructors run these boot camp workouts similar to the military boot camps. The instructors would ensure that all follow a strict regime and healthy diet throughout the program.

Most of the USA boot camps run on similar lines of the military boot camps and would involve waking up early in the morning to perform physical activities like jogging, sprinting, squats etc and also exercises for mental fitness like yoga, meditation. In order to make the boot camp fitness program interesting and get all involved , most of them would involve in some sporting activities like volleyball, basketball etc in them.

At the helm of things will be the fitness instructors, who will ensure that you get involved in some way in all these activities. Initially you may get a lot of frustration at the fitness instructors and view them as the stern faces in the boot camp fitness program. It won’t be easy to wake up early in the morning and finding yourself lagging behind in all the activities, it would initially cause a mental stigma and negative thoughts are bound to run over your mind. As the boot camp vacation goes on you can see yourself improving, if you keep trying and have a bit of patience. Instead if you are going to throw tantrums for silly reasons, then you will be the loser. The looser that lost to lose weight, the choice lies entirely in your hands.

If you are one of the people contributing to the obesity rates of USA, read on these interesting statistics- In the year 2004, $ 37 billion have been spent for carbonated beverages; .9 billion have been spent on cookies and .2 billion on meals in restaurants.

If you are amazed by these statistics and would want to make a healthier nation, you should seriously consider joining one of the USA boot camps with a strict task master who can bring the fat out of you.
